The Estaon Crucifixion. (Pallars Sobirá.)  

The mural painting of the apse in Santa Eulàlia in Estaon is now in the Museum of Catalan Art, except for the scene of the Crucifixion, which was acquired by the Urgell Museum.

According to the expert's criteria, this is one of the finest examples of the Crucifixion theme, though its state of conservation may be somewhat deficient.

 

The centre of the picture is this figure of Christ nailed to the Cross.

On the left appears Longinus with the spear raised and on the right Stefanus with the cauldron of gall.

To the left of Longinus the figure of Simon of Chyrrhene stands out, an old man carrying the cross of Christ on his back.

To summarise this cycle of mural painting, we should point out a curious technical duality between the pictorial groups mentioned above.

The schematic linealism which characterises the frescoes of Baltarga and València d'Aneu is in radical contrast with the sumptuous drapery of those from Isavarre and Estaon, which demonstrates the existence of two styles and two or more masters who coincided in the same era and in identical geographical areas.
